Finally the snow is here!  We were so excited to see the snowflakes outside our window!  Please make sure your child has a winter coat, snow pants, hat, gloves, and boots.  It will get very cold at recess without them!  Since it has been so warm it will be a harder transition into the colder weather.  Be prepared!

It is Miss Nelson's last week with us!  We wish her well in her future goal of teaching!

These students made their AR goal already!  Jasmin, Delanie, Iris, Joseph, Zach M., Alyah,  Kevin, Lindsey, Kyle, Carson, Jodi, Leo, Jonathan, Michael, Alea, Jasmin, Abby, and Jo Jo!  Students should be at 95% of their goal!

Students who are in second or fifth grade, and have not already returned the Seal-A-Smile form, will be receiving another form. We are asking that you complete this form indicating “Yes” or “No” regarding your child’s participation.
The Seal-A-Smile Program is offered by licensed dental hygienists. They will apply a thin film, “Seal,” over the top of your child’s teeth. This “Seal” will help to prevent cavities. It is a FREE  program to all participants in second and fifth grade! NO insurance required.
Please return the form to the Health Office by January 27, 2012. We need the form returned even if you choose not to participate. Thank you.

COUNTER ACT
NEWS:This week your child had their third Counter Act class.  This week  the fifth graders discussed positive activities to choose over negative activities with the police officers.  They also practiced the four Counter Act skills for saying no to peer pressure:  check it out, talk about the consequences, suggest a positive alternate, and follow through.  Remember, don’t forget to mark your calendar for Wednesday, February 8th, at 6p.m. for the Counter Act Celebration!

Science– Does the moon really change shape as the month progresses?  It may look like this is the case, but it’s not!  The different shapes that we see are called moon phases and are determined by the position of the Earth, moon, and sun.  Please support your child in looking for real-life examples of  the moon phases by checking the night sky for the moon on a nightly basis.  Your child should be able to tell you the name of the moon phase and why the moon looks the way it does.  Our test on this unit will require your child to use Oreo cookies to create the different phases of the moon in a complete lunar cycle.

Remember to sign Thursday folders.  These folders inform you of any late or missing work that your child owes.  It is a great way to stay connected to school.  Your child needs to bring it back on Friday to get a Duffy Dollar for responsibility!

Here are some more highlights of our week:

*Sharing our concerns and making get well cards for Mrs. Nocek
*Watching the movie "Remember the Titans" in guidance class
*Learning how to model the distributive property of decimals in math
*Writing creative stories based on the picture we chose
*Reading the novel Phoebe the Spy in reading class
*Practicing how to show multiplication, addition, and subtraction of decimals on 100's grids
*Attended the Counter Act program and learned about concequences for our actions
*Reading the book Extra Credit by Andrew Clements
*Reading our AR books and taking quizzes (students should be at 90% of goal by now)
*Learning about the English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia
*MAPS testing in reading
